SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS

The Greater Houston Section has two annual scholarship awards, the Charles N. Sherlock Memorial Scholarship Award and the Gerald E. Smith Memorial Scholarship Award.  Additionally, The Greater Houston Section, through its involvement with the International Chemical Petroleum Industry Inspection Technology (ICPIIT) Topical Conference, has a third scholarship award. The following are the requirements and guidelines for each of the scholarship awards.
 

ASNT Greater Houston Section Charles N. Sherlock Memorial Scholarship Award

1.0    Purpose

To encourage the study of nondestructive testing as a profession by providing financial assistance to individuals pursuing a program of study at a college or technical school within the State of Texas, leading to a degree or certificates in NDT.  Welding, engineering and science related programs utilizing NDT disciplines may also be considered.  This award memorializes the late Charles N. Sherlock, colleague and friend to many members of the Greater Houston Section.

2.0    Eligibility for Scholarship

To be eligible, the applicant must be currently enrolled in NDT related course work at one of the following schools/organizations:

Alvin Junior College College of the Mainland North Harris County College
Angelina College Houston Community College San Jacinto College
Brazosport College Lee College The Ocean Corporation

If an active member of the Greater Houston Section is attending a college or school not listed above, consideration of a scholarship will be evaluated by the scholarship committee.

3.0    Scholarship Award

A $300.00 scholarship and a one (1) year membership to ASNT will be awarded to the individual which the Scholarship Award Committee determines is most deserving.  Applicant shall comply with all the procedures and rules set forth by the Greater Houston Section of ASNT.  A check for $300.00, as one (1) year membership to ASNT, and a certificate will be presented to the winner at the Section's Student Night - March Meeting.

4.0    Number of Scholarship Awards Per Year

There shall be neither a minimum nor a maximum number of scholarships awarded each  year.  If there are no acceptable recipients in a given year or if funds do not permit, then the Greater Houston Section of ASNT is not obligated to make an award.  However, if there are several equal candidates and funds permit, then more than one scholarship award may be awarded.

5.0    Scholarship Awards Committee

The Scholarship Award Committee shall be composed of a minimum of three members, two of which shall be the Greater Houston Section's Directors-at-Large.  The senior Director-at-Large shall serve as the Chair of the Scholarship Award Committee, and shall be responsible for selecting additional committee members as needed from the Section's membership, subject to the approval of the Section's Executive Committee.  

6.0    Submission of Scholarship Award Application

Deadline for submission and receipt of individual scholarship award application is January 31st.

ASNT Greater Houston Section Gerald E. Smith Memorial Scholarship Award

1.0    Purpose

Lamar University Texas A&M University University of Texas
Prairie View A&M University Texas Southern University University of Houston
Rice University    

If an active member of the Greater Houston Section is attending a university not listed above, consideration of a scholarship will be evaluated by the scholarship committee.
